This shop manual is fair. It does not give a lot of detail on procedures, and it constantly refers to other sections for sub-procedures. I can understand that, though, to keep from repeating the same things over and over again and to thereby keep the size of the book (and cost) down. But it was a little irritating when they talked about a process, and it just assumed you knew how something looked, or where it was located.
I purchased this manual in order to replace the clutch on my 2001 Beetle TDI. I found the instructions to be incomplete and the descriptons and pictures did not match up in most cases. I think this was written based on a 1998 model with no consideration for later models. I had to purchase another manual to figure out some of the difficult issues. Note if you are going to do this job, the transaxle is very diffult to remove from the car due to tight frame clearances. I found that the exhaust had to be disconnected and the engine rotate forward several inches to create room for removal.
Came fast in good condition useable already read will help me with my car I get taken at mechanics all the time I am learning what might be wrong that I cant fix and how much it should cost and fixing little stuff myself!
It was in great shape. Glad i went this route.
So so on my opinion of this book. Was expecting a bit more here and there. Perhaps it was just me. I'd recommend going to the public library first to review this and other manuals to make sure you get the one you really want/need.
I ordered this book to maintain my mom's car. It is better than the cheaper publications but still lacking in some of the descriptions/photos. For example, changing a headlight was not explained well enough and the pictures were inaccurate. Overall worthwhile investment.
I have used Chilton's products many times for many years. This used manual arrived promptly, in the advertised condition. While it is difficult to find an owner's manual for the vehicle, this manual does a good job as an "expanded" owner's manual and basic care and repair guide.
Wow, what did I do when I bought a used Bug? The guide is very complete and thorough, but it is more suited to an actual mechanic than an owner trying to learn about their new purchase.
