So...5 stars for my son...not necessarily 5 stars for us as parents:)...our 17 month old son cannot get enough of this book. We literally sing it to him at least 10x a day and, if it was his choice, it would be many times more. We sing it to the tune of "This Old Man" and our son LOVES it.
This is such a wonderful book! I used it in my K-2 art classes as an introduction to Jazz music followed by a lesson on making art with a Jazz theme. The students loved the rhythm and rhyming patterns in the book and caught on to it quickly. It follows the tune of "This old man, he played one...." The illustrations are light and colorful with beautiful patterns and textures (all which the students incorporated into their artwork). Short bios on the jazz musicians at the back of the book were a nice way to wrap up the reading portion of our lesson and made the book really come to life. Highly recommended for anyone who loves jazz, children's books, illustrations, etc. A really fun read!
The text and pictures make it easy to have fun with this book. Also, it enable be to teach pre-schoolers how to scat. Great!
What a great book! It features a riff on a well-known kids song and leverages a catchy repeated phrase, jazz terminology, jazz greats and vibrant, engaging illustrations. The last pages of the book feature a little background on each jazz great. I read this to my two year old and as soon as we finished it she asked if we could read it again. It's definitely going into the rotation.
My favorite kids book. Everything about is matched perfectly, from the art, to the writing, to the font. Great way to get kids and even yourself more invested in the legends of Jazz.
The tune to this book is familiar ("This Old Man"), so my preschoolers started singing along, but the words/story was different so they were focusing and very interested in the instruments and the musicians on each page. Overall this book is very engaging and easy to get in to.
I've always loved this book. I used to teach at a daycare and this was one I used to read to my students a lot. Now that I have a child of my own, I couldn't wait to add this one to his collection of books. Not only is there counting, but they also provide a bit of Jazz history. Great book!
I love singing stories to my elementary students in music class. Over time, the students learn the tunes as well and sing with me. They enjoy visuals which is why the thought of musical "story time" is usually a success for me.
